Quezon City, Philippines—Alexandra May Cardoso, also known as AMD Cardoso, presents her latest work, BALIKBAYAN, as part of her Exit Project for the MFA Theatre Arts—Dramatic Writing program at the University of Idaho. Directed by Banaue Miclat, it brings to life Cardoso's narrative inspired by the dialogue-driven short story of the same title by writer Rayji de Guia.
BALIKBAYAN tells the turbulent journey of Stella, a transgender woman, as she returns to her hometow to find answers to the mystery surrounding her sister Katrina's disappearance. Through Stella's journey, the material brings in themes of identity, loss, and the need for closure.
Featuring an ensemble cast, including Yves Pangilinan as Stella and Jeremy Bravo as Katrina, along with Janina Mendoza, EV Gulapa, and Dominic Janssen, BALIKBAYAN promises an intimate theater experience that aims to raise awareness, spark dialogue, and inspire action.
BALIKBAYAN's staged reading is set on April 13, 2024, at 7:00 PM at the Ignacio B. Gimenez Gallery, University of the Philippines Diliman Quezon City. Admission is free to the public. Interested audiences can make with reservations available by scanning the QR code on the poster below.
