From just four choirs in 2009, mostly from the city of Manila, the number rose to an all-time high of thirty-one choirs hailing from all over the Philippines. What was once a competition for college choral groups has expanded to include two categories: High school and Open, including but not limited university, church or company choirs, government, and other ensembles.
Musica FEUROPA has become one of the most prestigious choral competitions held in the Philippines.
Tiffany Liong Gabuya of long-time media partners DZFE wrote, "We are aware that the classical tradition... which is today multi-national and multigenerational in its appeal and practice--has European origins. In our work to foster an appreciation for classic music, DZFE continue to support Musica FEUropa as it remains one the few initiatives here that encourages the hard work of studying and performing European repertory. We have also seen that Musica FEUROPA fosters patriotism among the participating local choral groups. The competition has shown the benefits of a cross-cultural initiative."
Being Musica EUROPA
The main criteria for Musica FEUROPA requires that each choir sings two songs. One song from a composer from the EU in any EU language, and one song from a Filipino in any Filipino dialect or language.
In the last thirteen years, choirs have sung songs in various European languages, including Czech, Latvian English, Basque Spanish, Italian, German, Finnish French, French-Flemish Flemish, Hungarian and Lithuanian, as well as Filipino languages, such as Tagalog Cebuano Bisaya Ifugao Ilokano Itneg Kinaraya T'boli Maguindanaoan Yakan and Hiligaynon.
Musica FEUROPA has helped Filipino choirs and audiences to become more aware and appreciative about the works of European composers and Filipino composers.
Musica FEUROPA has had such an impact on the Philippine choral calendar that it has become a major event in the last 13 year.
Musica FEUROPA leaves a musical heritage when it ends 14 years after its inception.
The last Musica EUROPA will be held on May 27, 2023 at the historic Auditorium of Far Eastern University in Manila. Tickets are P100 for FEU members, students and seniors in general.
The participating choirs for the final round of Musica FEUropa are the NU Chorale, PNU Chorale, SaSeSi, Kammerchor Manila, Tarlac Mannerchor and the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng San Pablo Chorale.
Internationally recognized leaders in the choral music industry such as Anna Abeleda Piquero, Arwin Tang, Dr. Ed Manguiat Jonathan Velasco, Ramon Lijauco Jr. shall be this year's adjudicators.
