9 Works Theatrical (9WT), a renowned production company in the Philippines, is set to reopen its theater doors after a three-year break with a revival of Jonathan Larson's tick, tick...BOOM! Following its successful run in 2016 and the recent acclaim of the Netflix adaptation, 9WT has chosen Larson's rock monologue as its grand comeback production, sparking excitement among theater enthusiasts and film lovers alike.
tick, tick...BOOM! revolves around Jon, a struggling musical composer on the brink of turning 30, yet still searching for his breakthrough in the industry. Plagued by doubts about whether pursuing his artistic dreams is worth the challenges, Jon navigates life by pouring his heart into composing musicals, all while trying to maintain his relationship with his girlfriend, Susan. Susan, a talented dancer who teaches ballet to affluent but untalented children, shares Jon's existential crisis and dreams of leaving New York to seek a more stable and secure future. The show also introduces Michael, Jon's best friend, who once pursued an acting career but has now embraced a more lucrative path as a marketing executive.
Leading the cast as Jon is the multi-awarded actor Jef Flores, known for his remarkable performances in Disney's Newsies and Eto Na! Musikal nAPO!. He earned the Philstage Gawad Buhay Best Actor for both a dramatic play (This is Our Youth) and a musical (tick, tick...BOOM!). Notably, Jef is also a musical composer, currently involved in writing dance music for Galaw.Co Dance Theater.
Sharing the role of Jon is the renowned GMA actor and personality Khalil Ramos, celebrated for his contributions to various TV and film productions, including 2 Cool 2 Be Forgotten, Liway, and LSS, among others. As a photographer, aspiring film director, and content creator, Khalil's artistic spirit mirrors Jon's, adding a unique flair to the character.
Tanya Manalang, who previously portrayed Susan in 9WT's 2016 production of tick, tick...BOOM!, returns to reprise the role with newfound maturity and experience as an adult and married woman. Having made the country proud with her role as Kim in Cameron Mackintosh's critically-acclaimed West End production of Miss Saigon, Tanya has continued to impress with outstanding performances in productions like Rak of Aegis and Ang Huling El Bimbo.
The multi-talented Kayla Rivera, a TV and musical theater performer, radio DJ, recording artist, host, and model's role is sharing Susa. Kayla is known for her powerful vocals and accolades from competitions like David Foster's Star Search and ABS-CBN's Star Power, and she brings her vibrant energy and expertise to the character.
Michael's character will be portrayed by the remarkable Vien King, a two-time Best Actor in a Musical awardee from the LEAF Awards and Philstage Gawad Buhay Awards. Vien's versatility as a commercial model, international performer, and actor further enriches the role.
Joining him is Reb Atadero, one of the most sought-after theater actors of his generation, known for his outstanding work in musicals such as Ang Huling El Bimbo and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Reb's talent extends to singing, hosting, voice acting, directing, and content creation, making him a prominent figure in the industry.
For this production, Director Robbie Guevara and the team have introduced a unique twist. Instead of fixed sets of actors, the cast members will be mixed and matched for each show, creating fresh and distinct experiences for the audience.
tick, tick...BOOM! is directed by Robbie Guevara, with Daniel Bartolome as musical director, JM Cabling as choreographer, Mio Infante as scenographer, Shakira Villa-Symes as lighting designer, Bam Tiongson as Sound Designer, Myrene Santos as hair and makeup designer, Marlito Ambrocio as technical director, Ian Cartalaba as costume supervisor, and JV Rabano as photographer.
